HISTORICAL DESCRIPTION

9 – St. a Clara Church: Built in the middle of the 13th century, it’s a characteristic example of the mendicant Gothic architecture, mention made to the eight arcades, tall columns and decorated capitals. Illumination is achieved through a rose-window and by various chinks and windows.

11 – S.Francisco Monastery: Built around 1242 in Gothic style, the building suffered several changes and additions through the centuries, standing out the Upper Choir which lodged the tomb of King D. Fernando (14th century). Damaged by the 1755 earthquake, by the French invasions and the Civil War (1832-34), reopened in 2009.

15 – City Market: Dated 1930 and designed by Cassiano Branco. In addition to the architectural language of the building, a notable set of tiled panels stands out on the exterior.

19 – Figueiras Water Fountain: Important example of gothic, civil architecture, representative of public works in the 13th/14th centuries. The ribbed dome displays crests with royal arms (D. Afonso IV or D. Dinis) and those of the municipality.

20 – N.ª Srª da Piedade Church: Built in the second half of the 17th century to commemorate the victory (attributed to Nossa Senhora da Piedade) of the Portuguese over the Spaniards in the Battle of Ameixial. during the Portuguese Restoration War. The façade is in mannerist style and the interior in baroque style, preserving a medieval city gate.
The organ dates from the late 19th century.

21 – Professor Doutor Joaquim Verissimo Serrão Research Centre: This centre has at the visitors’ disposal all the bibliographic and documentary collection of this historical researcher. It alms to support all forms of scientific knowledge.

22 – Diocesan Museum of Santarém: In this museum visitors can get to know a collection of religious objects, with both historical and artistic importance, including paintings, sculptures and glazed tiles, comprising a wide period of time that goes from the 13th century.

23 – Cathedral: Dedicated to Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. Built in the 17th and 18th centuries by the Company of Jesus, over the ruins of the Royal Palace. Shows a façade in mannerist style and the interior of one sole nave with side chapels in baroque style. The beautiful marble work. gilded woodwork and paintings on the ceilings of the chancel and the nave are worth a visit. The building housed the patriarchal seminary until the creation of the Dioceses In 1975.
The English organ dates from the 19th century.

34 – Santa Cruz Church: Located in Ribeira de Santarém, ancient riverside neighbourhood, this church was built In the mid-13th century In Gothic style, though elements from other architectonic styles were built, namely in the Renaissance and Baroque periods. In the 18th century the baroque campaign added a side doorway and a tower.

38 – Cabaças Tower / Time Museum: Probably an ancient tower from the walled area that was adapted to a clock-tower in the 15th century. It was one of the first of its kind in Portugal. Nowadays it holds in a museum dedicated to the evocation and interpretation of Time by Man.

41 – S. Nicolau Church: Built in gothic style, was rebuilt in 1600 under the leadership of Baltasar Álvares. In its interior stands out the tombs of Fernão Rodrigues Redondo and João Afonso de Santarém, both are classified as national monuments. The mannerist façade is divided into 5 parts separated by pilasters. From the same period and with high artistic value are the two paintings of Bento Coelho da Silveira (1670).
The organ dates from the beginning of the 19th century.

42 – Iglesia de N.ª Sr.ª de Marvila: This is the most important testimony of the Manueline style in Santarém, the main façade is the key feature. Inside we are surprised by the glazed tiles from the 17th century (which gave it the epithet of “cathedral of the 17th century tiles” in Portugal).
The organ dates from the beginning of the 19th century.

44 – S. João de Alporão Church / Museum of Archeology and Medieval Arts: Built In the 12th century during the Christian Reconquest. It is a testimony to the Romanesque, whose chancel, doorways, rose-window and oculus on the triumphal arch deserve the attention of every visitor.

45 – Ethnographical Museum of Ribeira de Santarém: displays everyday life objects of the people that worked In the fields of Ribatejo and on the river Tejo: from the agricultural implements to the fishing equipments and domestic items (Visits by prior arrangement: Mob: 914 142 053 I 916 512 375).

46 – Misericórdia Church: Architectural example from the late Renaissance in Santarém with Tuscan columns decorated with grotesque elements. The post-earthquake renovation of the façade, after 1755, reflects the influences of Baroque. The organ dates from the beginning of the 19th century.

48 – Brasil House: 18th century building constructed over the quarters possibly belonging to the family of Pedro Álvares Cabral. In 1996 it became a place dedicated to Santarem’s connections with the discoveries, and especially with Brazil, so becoming an important point of cultural diffusion in the city.

53 – N.ª Sr.ª da Graça Church: Built in the 14th and 15th centuries, this church is the most beautiful example of Gothic architecture in Santarém. In the harmonious façade the portico stands out, along with an unusual and flamboyant rose-window. Important tombs can be found inside, namely that of Pedro Álvares Cabral (who discovered Brazil) and the one of D. Pedro de Meneses (1st General Consul of Ceuta).

57 – Passos Canavarro Museum: Located on the site of the former palace of D. Afonso Henriques, the house acquired in 1841 by the politician Passos Manuel and immortalized by the writer Almeida Garrett in the book “Viagens na Minha Terra”. The house displays a rich collection composed of paintings, furniture, porcelain and other objects related to the connection of Pedro Canavarro with Japan and the East. 58 – Santa Maria de Alcáçova Church: Founded in 1154 by the Knights Templar as their headquarters over a pre-existing roman structure. Until 1834 was royal chapel. Shows three naves separated by Tuscan columns and three apse chapels. In the interior stands out the stucco lining, single in the local heritage and the glazed tile panels dating to the 16th and 18th centuries. The organ dates from the beginning of the 19th century.

61 – Anselmo Braamcamp Freire Museum: Located in the former Palace of the Barons of Almeirim, this museum has a vast artistic, bibliographic and documentary patrimony. In the art gallery mention must be made to the paintings of Josefa d’Obidos (1630 – 1684), Tomás de Anunciação, José Malhoa (19th century), Quinchardte, Drogstroot and Dirk Stoop.

63 – Jesus Cristo Hospital Church: Constructed in the 17th/18th centuries, it follows the style of the cannons of mannerist architecture.

the interior stands out the gilded woodcarvings on the altars, the painting of the altarpiece, the glazed tiles lining and the frescoes on the ceilings. The organ dates from the 18th century.

64 – St.º Estevão Church / Shrine of the Most Holy Miracle: Rebuilt In the 16th century, the interior is a notable example of the Renaissance blueprint. The Tabernacle can be found in the chancel, containing the relic of the Most Holy Miracle (13th century),  object of worship and pilgrimage.

65  – Portas do Sol Garden/Belvedere: Considered to be the most beautiful belvedere of the city. Located on the site of Santarém old Fortress, of which a walled structure and the Porta do Sol (Sun Gate) remain.

66 – USCI — Urbi Scallabis Interpretation Centre: This museum displays archaeological discoveries made in the ancient fortress and surrounding area, in vitrines, combined with a multimedia component that allows visitors to know the different periods of history shown, since pre-history until contemporary times.

69 – “Forcado” Museum: The Amateur Bull Tackling Group of Santarém was created in 1915, being the oldest in Portugal. The museum displays many items collected through the vast existence, from the elaborate costumes belonging to several generations to the images showing the best moments of courage and glory of the Group.
